Musicians Together – First Dublin Session. Darkey Kelly’s – July 2012.

On Tuesday 17th. July we held the first Dublin MT session in Darkey Kelly’s.

Huge thanks to the management and staff for facilitating us and making us feel so welcome. And of course we must mention the ‘ordinary’ customers who actually seemed to enjoy our acoustic assault of Rock, Blues and Country. We are greatly looking forward to returning again soon. For those interested in such things, the name ‘Darkey Kelly’ refers to a woman burned at the stake 250 years ago for witchcraft and murder, so definitely our kind of place!

MT members included Joe McGuinness, Ciaran Brennan, Alan Begley, John O’Grady, Tony Floyd Kenna, Brian Aherne and special guest and soon to be member Corrina Penston. All ably cheered on and encouraged by Hannah, Michele, Ian (Maggies Farm and Good intentions drummer), Sheree (writer), Declan,  Mei, Brian and Johnathan.

Tony kicked off the evening with ‘Bought & Sold’ and ‘My Woman Blues’ and later new song ‘Heart In A Box’ – when he finally remembered the words! Joe McGuinness entertains us with ‘Flat Cat Moan’ and ‘Tick Tock’, with, as we would expect, some awesome guitar playing. From Ciaran we had his great radio friendly tunes including ‘Don’t Mean Maybe’, ‘Falling At Your Feet’, ‘You Say’ (with lots of musical backing from the rest of the crew), ‘Don’t Need Nobody’, and more.

Corrina sang the awesome ‘Invisible’ which will be on her soon to be completed
debut album, and she also captivated us with a couple more beautifully sung
originals, what a voice, what a range. Brian treated us to ‘Heh Cheater’, ‘Give
It Up Baby’ and ‘One Last Time’. John delivered upbeat versions of ‘It’s Not
Easy’ and ‘Sky’ accompanied by his easy fluid masterful guitar playing. In his
trade mark country blues style, Alan sang several originals including the
cool  ‘Hey Dawg’. For a lighthearted singalong moment Corrina and Tony did a version of ‘Hey, Hey, Hey’, with of course everyone joining in! Throughout the evening extra accompaniment and singing spontaneously came from the musicians and guests present, you really really could call it Musicians Together!

And, as if all that was not enough, interspersed throughout the evening and and
during the final ‘jam’ could be heard some great covers including Radiohead’s
‘High And Dry’ by Ciaran, Tony and John on Bowie’s ‘Sorrow’, Alan on some cool country, John on Lyle Lovetts ‘She Ain’t No Lady, She’s My Wife’, a version the writer would be jealous of! Joe on the classic ‘Black Magic Woman’.

I believe a ‘splendid time’ was had by all! Some people had never met before,
some hadn’t met for years (33 in one case!), but there were no strangers, no
nerves,  just a little gathering of like minded creative souls surfing the groove. We look forward to doing it again….soon! …and yep, next time we’ll have the video running!
