Our advice would be

Just keep at it..I/we wish we had the Net when we were 18, we had fanzines and the like
Nigel does covers on his own in pubs but he got his breaks by doing open mics and leaving his details behind, talent will out!, When I was doing covers in The Condition I would go on a poster, flyer, handout night out and bombard every shop window going...The adage that the one person in the corner of the room could make things happen is TRUE!..We got ourselves a regular income from a residency that way
Ultimately..Believe in yourself...Have fun and don't annoy the neighbours
