Instruments / Tremolo on slide
« on: January 21, 2013, 08:25:18 PM »
Don't have a video of this... yet. To do a really well controlled tremolo on slide, anchor the meat of your thumb on the underside of the neck and then push and pull against the muscles of your thumb. Works real well, and gives great control.  ;)

Instruments / Re: Open Tunings

Thanks mate. I get that bit. It's what to bdo afterwards that's the mystery :D

I presume if I barre the second fret I have an E etc. But there must be a load of open chord voicings too.

This is in an open C http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfAS6nwYc9g for example.

I've been googling and it looks incredibly difficult.

Sorry Mark, I can't help you with chord shapes as I pretty much only play with the slide. You could just make up your own stuff. I did this Knopfler cyberjam a while back using an open minor tuning I made up. It was easy enough to work out the other chord shapes.

Hi Mark:

Tune your guitar to open D...   D  A  D  F#  A  D. That's pretty standard for slide, but Knopfler also uses that tuning on his reso for Romeo and Juliet.

Instruments / "Instruments"
« on: September 30, 2012, 01:17:56 AM »
Who in their right mind would ask a guy who calls himself "Boog" to moderate anything  ;D. Oh well, I guess this little corner of MT is stuck with me. I'm a sort of hermit musician, and I just make it up as I go along :)

"Instruments"... seems broad to me, so unless you're posting something about surgical instruments (unless of course, it's also a musical instrument... you never know... mad Dr. Svartzenfetzer and his scalpel thumb piano :), it's OK with me.

Cheers and be happy

Hi Boog,

Your music is awesome as always... And im far from being any sorta of guitar or dulcimer player ( though i try :-p )... it might be fun to do a collaboration together... though to what im not so sure yet.. but i'd would think it be awesome... I'm sure that if we put our minds to it we can make something awesome...

take care
Jaydon

Hi Jaydon. I'm very happy to do a collab. If you've got something you'd like to have a look at, please send me a link :)

I really enjoy the odd cyberjam. If anyone might like some slide in their tune, I'm happy to give it a try :)

Enjoy :)

The Muso's Rest / Re: Have banjo, don't travel :)
« on: September 10, 2012, 05:30:19 PM »
I know this hasn't been replied to in about a year but anyway... i am trying to put together an collection of covers of my original songs (www.soundcloud.com/lionheadmusic) and i think it would be great if you could do a cover on banjo and we could possibly get a vocalist involved to do the singing (obviously ::) ) like your vids on YouTube, very Celtic! Anyway let me know what you think...

David  :)

Hi David ... thanks for the reply. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Unfortunately due to arthritis I can't play the banjo any more, but I do play slide guitar and would be happy to add a track of that if you're interested. Here's an example:  http://musicianstogether.com/video/X68M454OM2DA/Dark-Island

The Muso's Rest / Have banjo, don't travel :)

Hi folks, this is a wee addy. As most of you know, I'm a banjo picker. What I really like to do is back-up other musicians. I get a real kick out of figuring out original banjo arrangements that compliment ... I hope, at least that's the goal ... the entire arrangement. Opinions may vary on whether or not I succeed:

... sorry Mikee ... its a Youtube ... cut me some slack, I have been a very good boy  :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyDuc2qlKdQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPqvsx4Wxv8

I'm not really a bluegrass picker, although I can get around in it if I need to  :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU7XSFTINJg

... I have my own way of playing and a lot of that is informed by listening to what's going on.

So here's the deal. I am interested in putting a banjo track or two on your CD. For this service I get "Banjo by Boog" in the credits ... and if it goes platinum and you're playing the Royal Albert Hall, me and my banjo get a first class ticket to London to play the gig ... and spending money ... and Mikee gets to come and hang out  :D

The way I am doing this now is to have "you" send me a good mp3 of the arrangement. I'll do the banjo work and send back both mixed and raw mp3's. If you like it and use it, book my ticket to London ... if not trash it and no worries. Even if you don't use it, for me, I will have learned something so it's in no way a waste of my time.

At the moment my recording set-up makes 2 tin cans and a rope look impressive, however my brother is building his own sound studio and soon I'll be able to record on really good stuff.

BTW ... the sweet spot for the 5-string banjo ... G to C inclusive ... 2/4 time ... 120 to 140 bpm   :D

Cheers,
Boog

The Muso's Rest / REALLY WORTH A LISTEN!
« on: June 20, 2011, 05:04:30 AM »
This is an interview that was broadcast this afternoon on the radio program Tapestry on the CBC in Canada. It's a long interview Mary Hynes conducted with bass maestro, Victor Wooten (Wooten plays with banjoist, Bela Fleck). The very interesting thoughts of a man who is a true musical genius ... I've seen Victor live, and I can say I have never seen or heard anything like it. I was at a Bela Fleck concert in Banff Alberta ... way up in the pines ;) I was dead centre, 7 rows back. The man is a total magician on his instrument, and as it turns out he is also very smart, highly articulate, and dare I say, wise. This is without doubt, the best interview I have ever heard on the subject of music. So, pour a glass of Merlot, sit back and enjoy ;)

Ian
... hope this link works in Europe ...

I know, it's a Youtube but this is just sooooo damned good I had to share it LOL. I'm thinking this shite-for-brains probably thought, "Aldrin's in his 70's, nothing to worry about here   "
